The 2008 clone 337 captures the softer side of Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, with a velvety mouthfeel, vibrant aromatics and beautiful red fruit layers, this clone has become an integral part of many of our blends.

Chappellet is partnering with the SAFE campaign (Safeguarding a Future for Africa’s Elephants) by donating 20% of earmarked wine sales to protect this keystone species. Enter SAFE at checkout to make your purchase count.

Chappellet’s Las Piedras, a Spanish term that translates to “the rocks,” is a wine that celebrates the prized, rugged terrain of Pritchard Hill. The thin, rock-laden soils of our vineyards yield small, concentrated berries with robust flavors. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus blended individual lots of four of the traditional Bordeaux varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec—to create this expressive wine.

While we don’t grow Petite Sirah on Pritchard Hill, we do love the varietal! This wine comes from two exceptional high-elevation sites, our neighbor Jan Krupp’s renowned Stagecoach Vineyard, and Bald Mountain Vineyard on top of Mount Veeder. With an elevation of approximately 1,500 feet, an excellent southern exposure and very rocky soils, Stagecoach produces outstanding mountain-grown Petite Sirah. At an elevation of 2,000 feet, Bald Mountain is a cold, low yielding site, with peak temperatures often 15 degrees cooler on any given day than what we experience on Pritchard Hill.

The Chappellet Cabernet Franc is a traditional Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Franc at its base. The original vines were planted in 1989, making Cabernet Franc a relatively new addition to Pritchard Hill. This variety thrives on the hill’s volcanic soils, where conditions are ideal for developing ripe, concentrated flavors. The wine was bottled after spending 18 months in French Oak barrels (60% new).

Cultivation pays homage to two of our great passions: mountain-grown grapes and the art of the blend. While Chappellet’s blends historically are made from the great grape varieties of Bordeaux, Cultivation also draws inspiration from other red grapes, including California heritage varietals Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Cultivation showcases beautiful mountain fruit, plush tannins and
layered complexity.

The supple and elegant Merlot grown on our Pritchard Hill® vineyard continues to remind wine lovers how delicious Merlot can be. This wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (40% new), and was blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot for added structure and complexity.

To craft our debut Pinot Noir, we sourced grapes from the legendary Dutton Ranch. In 1967 (the same year Chappellet was founded), the late Warren Dutton Jr. planted his family’s first vineyard. This site helped to establish Sonoma County as one of the world’s great appellations for growing Burgundian varieties. Today, Warren’s sons  guide one of Sonoma County’s most acclaimed vineyard operations. For our inaugural release, we selected grapes from some of Dutton Ranch’s most highly prized Russian River Valley Pinot Noir plantings.

Long regarded as the quintessential “California” grape, Zinfandel played an historic role in the emergence of California as a producer of flavorful, delicious wines. Widely planted throughout the state by the early wine pioneers, the grape was valued for its rich flavors and suitability to the climate. Our 2011 Napa Valley Zinfandel was produced from 43-year-old vines grown in the Mayacamas Range, 2,000 feet above the valley floor.

Our Chenin Blanc has a long and storied history on Pritchard Hill®. The original vines were already producing when Donn and Molly purchased the property in the late 1960s. Following a replanting in 2004, we reintroduced our Chenin Blanc as a “Signature” designation—with a twist. While our Signature Cabernet and Chardonnay bear Donn Chappellet’s name, Molly Chappellet’s signature graces our Chenin Blanc label. To add depth and complexity, the 2012 Chenin Blanc was fermented in a combination of neutral French oak barrels, stainless steel barrels and tanks, and a Nomblot concrete “egg.”

Our Napa Valley Chardonnay is made using fruit grown on elite vineyards in some of the coolest regions of Napa Valley. The majority of the grapes come from Kelly Ranch, which overlooks the San Pablo Bay, where marine influences and shallow soils composed of clay and gravel create optimal growing conditions for Chardonnay. To add depth and complexity, the 2012 vintage also includes fruit from Poe Vineyard in Napa-Carneros and Red Hen Vineyard in Oak Knoll. This wine was aged on its lees for eight months in one-third new French oak barrels. For added texture and viscosity, a significant portion of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation.
