2016 Chappellet Napa Valley Chardonnay
“Lemon drop, Asian pear and fresh-cut apple flavors make for a crisp white that features touches of richness. Lush midpalate, with a lithe, spicy finish. Drink now through 2021." 90 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style.

“I tasted a wide range of wines with Molly and Cyril Chappellet and their longtime winemaker, Phillip Corallo-Titus. Chappellet’s Cabernet Sauvignon Signature remains one of the best values in Napa Valley, while the flagship Pritchard Hill bottling has gained in refinement in recent years.”

2015 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
“Bright red cherry, plum, rose petal and mint notes give the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature a very distinctive and, frankly surprising, amount of freshness. Vibrant, perfumed and nuanced, the Signature is flat-out delicious. The purity of the fruit here is striking, especially at this level. This mid-weight, gracious Cabernet remains one of the very best values in Napa Valley. The Signature saw 60% new oak, about half of it American, and the rest Hungarian and American. 2020 – 2035.” 93 Points: Outstanding. A wine of remarkable personality and breed that is well worth seeking out.

2015 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
"The 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet from Chappellet is a lovely showing made from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 3% Malbec. It opens to inviting aromas of freshly crushed blackberries and dark cherries laced with spices, mocha, anise all taking shape. On the palate this full and voluptuous, with remarkable depth and concentration. Layers of ripe dark fruits come together with spices and violets as they build up to the long, opulent finish. Even at this early age the Signature Cabernet is extremely impressive, nonetheless should also cellar beautifully for many years. This wine consistenly delivers year after year and given its quality, it remains one of Napa Valley's finest values." 94 Points

2015 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
"Also inky colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill comes from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill and spent 22 months in new French oak. It has a similar level of purity, as well as incredible minerality, to go with notes of crème de cassis, scorched earth, crushed rock, and graphite. Reminiscent of licking a rock with its insane level of minerality, this full-bodied beauty is tight and closed on the palate, yet is just loaded with potential. It’s only for those with cold cellars and needs forgotten for 7-8 years, but will keep for 4-5 decades. Bravo!” 100 Points: As good as it gets. These wines reach the peak of my personal scale of quality.

2015 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
"Looking at the two releases from Chappellet, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is the larger production cuvee and sees 22 months in 50% new French oak. Its deep, inky color is followed by an incredibly pure bouquet of crème de cassis, hints of blue fruits, graphite, and cedar. With gorgeous minerality, full-bodied richness, building tannin and notable purity, it’s an incredible wine, as well as a sensational value.” 96 Points: As good as it gets. These wines reach the peak of my personal scale of quality.

2015 Chappellet Napa Valley Chardonnay
"For this wine, grapes are sourced from cooler sites within the valley, as well as from a high-elevation site on Mount Veeder. Together, they provide a juicy, fleshy core of apple and pear fruit girded by mineral-laden texture and tension. The finish is marked by oak-derived toast and brioche notes." 90 Points: Excellent, highly recommended.

2016 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
"Owner Molly Chappellet's beloved baby, this white is deliciously crisp, dry and balanced, with layers of Meyer lemon, waxy apple and floral gardenia. Percolating acidity maintains its freshness beneath its rich texture and tropical succulence." 92 Points: Excellent, highly recommended.

2015 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
"Opaque purple-black in color, the intensely scented 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is already strutting its stuff, revealing gregarious crème de cassis, baked plums and blackberry preserves notes over notions of cigar box, new leather, charcuterie and tar, plus menthol and sautéed herbs wafts. Full-bodied, concentrated and expressive in the mouth, it features firm, finely grained tannins and plenty of freshness framing the generous fruit, finishing on a lingering herbal note. 2017-2037." 97 Points: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase, and consume.

Wines to Know

2016 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
"Among the white wines you should not miss this summer is this delicious legend. It's snappy and creamy, limey and minerally, all in the same fantastic sip. And why a legend? Well, Molly Chappellet herself is one of the legendary Napa Valley pioneers. But also, in 1967, during Napa's 'second Golden Age,' when she and her late husband Donn began their winery on Pritchard Hill, they found chenin blanc vines already growing. The family has continued to make the variety for nearly 50 years, despite bankers and brokers who, early on, kept insisting that the other grape which started with 'ch' would be a much better idea. Um, not exactly."

2014 Napa reds signal a new era of classicism

2014 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
“This shows great structure and muscle with a firm and flexing tone. Full-bodied, tight and reserved. Currants, black truffles and espresso. A classic structure that harks back to the great Chappellets of the 1970s. Savory. What length. Will improve with many years, but it's still a dream to drink now.” 98 Points: A must buy.

2014 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
“Aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, mushrooms and spices. Full and very intense with lots of fruit. Firm and silky. Plenty of tension. Layered and intense. Love it now, but this will be better in 2020.” 94 Points: Outstanding.

In short, these are terrific wines

2014 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and the rest Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, is a classic example of Pritchard Hill, Chappellet and of Napa Valley. Brilliant purity, a dense purple color, superb blackberry and floral-infused blueberry fruit and cassis, a full-bodied mouthfeel, moderate but sweet tannin and a long, layered, texture and finish make for a profound Cabernet Sauvignon that actually sells at a bargain price for what is in the bottle. Moreover, look for it to evolve graciously for another 20+ years. 2016 – 2036.” 94+ Points: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.

Exemplifies the very best attributes of its kind

2014 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is every bit as magnificent today as it was last year from barrel. Inky, concentrated and regal in its pedigree, the 2014 is all class. The 2014 is not as bombastic or huge as the 2013. Instead, it is a wine of total finesse and elegance. The purity of the fruit is simply striking. This is a mesmerizing, utterly compelling wine from the Chappellet family. 2022 – 2044” 97 Points: Exceptional. A profound and emotionally moving wine that exemplifies the very best attributes of its kind. These are the world’s great, iconic wines.

A stunner and one of the great, great 2014s

2014 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
“The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, is a stunner and one of the great, great 2014s. Inky purple with blueberry and blackberry fruit, cassis, licorice, graphite and white flowers, the wine is stunningly concentrated, full-bodied and seemingly one of the greatest of the 2014s. Still youthful, with at least 25-30 years of upside potential at the minimum, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050.” 99 Points: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. These are the world’s great, iconic wines

“The Chappellets were the early pioneers of Pritchard Hill and remain one of the leading families in Napa Valley. This is a superb set of new releases. The Pritchard Hill Cabernet remains the estate's top wine.”

2015 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
“A deep, unctuous wine, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill captures the essence of the year in its imposing, concentrated personality. Crème de cassis, graphite, gravel, smoke, spice, cloves and lavender infuse this inky, layered, rich Cabernet Sauvignon. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 is never heavy or overdone, rather it has all the potential to develop into one of the wines of the vintage. The interplay of huge fruit and imposing tannins offers plenty of intrigue.” 95-98 Points: Exceptional. A profound and emotionally moving wine that exemplifies the very best attributes of its kind. These are the world’s great, iconic wines.

2014 Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is fabulous. A host of graphite, smoke, licorice, lavender, crème de cassis and exotic spice give the wine its characteristic savory and mineral-drenched flavors. Medium in body and exquisitely layered in the glass, the Signature is a real head-turner. Best of all, it is a superb value. And I do mean superb. 2019 – 2029” 93 Points: Outstanding. A wine of remarkable personality and breed that is well worth seeking out.

2013 Chappellet Cabernet Franc
“The 2013 Cabernet Franc is a super-distinctive wine. Powerful, deep and succulent, the 2013 exudes personality. The Chappellet Cabernet Franc is probably best described as a red blend given the high percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, sage and spice are nicely pushed forward. This is an unusually supple 2013 that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Silky tannins give the wine its finesse. This is a beautiful wine from Chappellet. 2018 – 2028” 93 Points: Outstanding. A wine of remarkable personality and breed that is well worth seeking out.

12 Best Wines of 2016

“Perhaps this column should more accurately be titled the ten most enjoyable wines of 2016… they are just twelve wines that made me go WOW! And then WOW! again as I drank, and contemplated and savored. They all had one thing in common, though: each achieved what for me is the nirvana of wine enjoyment: they sparked my intellectual curiosity, they made me think, as well as delivering visceral pleasure by the magnum-load.”

2014 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
“Quite the best American Chenin Blanc I’ve ever drunk. Absolutely crisp dry, but packed with tropical fruit – lychees, tangerines and summer peaches – balanced by ribbons of bright, Loire-like acidity. And to think, 60 years ago, there was more CB in Napa than Chardonnay. True, really! Though I shudder to think what it tasted like. Now it’s almost disappeared, save for this gem.”

Today’s Featured Wine

2014 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
“Thirty years ago, Chappellet was well known for Chenin Blanc, the wines widely considered the best California renditions of the varietal. But when the vineyard got too old, the family felt a financial pressure to plant more Cabernet and other red varietals. Now, however, they have a new Chenin vineyard, and the 2014 from it tastes simply glorious. Made in a Vouvray style, it’s slightly sweet but impeccably balanced, and offers layered fruit flavors that linger extremely long on the palate.” 94 Points

Superb; A great achievement

2014 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
“From the family that has made the variety from a three-acre block on Pritchard Hill since the 1960s, missing a few years to replant, this is such a lovely, well-composed and deliciously enjoyable wine it might induce tears of happiness, that’s how good it is. Apricot, vanilla and cream surround a rounded, smooth lushness spiked in spicy nutmeg and tea.” 94 Points, Editors’ Choice: Superb; A great achievement.

These Great American White Wines

“If your taste buds want something other than chardonnay, three other possibilities are appended, including a great chenin blanc — a grape making a comeback in Napa Valley — from Chappellet.”

2014 Chappellet Signature Chenin Blanc
“Before chardonnay domination came along, chenin blanc was widely made in Napa Valley, and I would love to see more like this one — crisp green flavors, but with more of an apple character and white-flower aromas than sauvignon blanc gives.”

Wine of the Week

2013 Chappellet Cabernet Franc
“I love the ‘completeness’ of this wine. From start to finish, its heartbeat is evident throughout the whole sensory arc of the wine. And then there’s what I call its ‘green-blackness’—a signature aroma and flavor of cabernet franc in California. Green-blackness is a long, sleek, savory character that’s one part tar/tobacco and one part dried sage. Chappellet’s cabernet franc nails it—and with beauty besides. Haven’t had a cabernet franc in a while? This could be your inducement.” 94 Points
